Anyone know what Ford is using for their leather seats? I had a cut in a 2009 edge. It was in the front panel of the lower set area. It looked like vinyl, as it appeared to have a cloth type weave behind it. The grain disappeared with heat but did not shrink at all as leather can do. The compound just rolled off the surface when cured. So its not vinyl. I tried leather glue with dry leather fill. It also didn't seem to stick. I ended up just using CA and leather Goop. This was one of those that didn't leave me with that warm fuzzy feeling. None of the normal adhesives I had seem to work.

on the 2009 edges. I was just working on one yesterday on the back seat, and somebody got some nail polish on the leather. I took some acetone to take off the nail polish, and the whole coating separated from the leather. I think it's a polyurethane coating. It does not act like normal leather coatings (*goop on)seems to work as a filler and our water base color coat with cross-link or seems to hold :D

Wait until you have a cut in one. The standard heat cure compounds just rub off. LA1 didn't work on a sub patch. I had to use a ca glue to get it closed, then goop on top to fill it in. I just hope it holds.

My quest is to find the perfect glue, that will keep knife cuts that are all the way through leather from coming apart. So far I have been able to rip apart every repair sample with my bare hands, that includes vinyl compound repairs as well. Heat cure compounds work much better on round holes in leather, but on straight cuts eventually the vinyl compounds will detach from the leather, usually separation will start at the actual cut.

Ca glues just won't do in the furniture market, where repairs have to be very flexiblle. I haven't tried Goop products yet, but looking at their products' MSDSs I've been able to determine that a lot of the glues are actually comprised of the same formulations, just the names are different. Nice marketing ploy. Plus a different solvent (apparently carcinogenic) is used for Goop products sold in Canada. The solvent used in the USA is more flammable.

Tested the following adhesives:

1) LA1-soaked into the leather well but bond wasn't strong enough under stress.
2) Beacon 527-strength of bond is high but not good enough, glue is a bit too stiff, especially for soft leathers.
3) VLP-great flexibility, about the same strength as #2, stronger solvent than #2.
4) LM Leather Glue-flexible, but not strong enough.

Well back to my lab to conduct more mad experiments. Will test a couple of other adhesives.

I purchased some GOOP for testing purposes...same experiment as stated above. Let the sample repair cure for three days. I was disappointed on how easily I was able to rip my repair apart. Anyone else have any input on strong glues? Some techs apparently are using Aleene's glue products which I haven't tried.
